Sand dunes provide an important buffer between the ocean force and the island. 


Sea Oats preserve the fragile dunes 
against erosion, and are protected by 
law. You may notice grackles along the dunes--they rely on the oats for food.

The Town's 2007 beach renourishment placed much greater distance between 
the tides and the dunes

 


Even though these dunes were eroded by Hurricane Tammy, the strength of the Sea Oats roots protected beachfront homes from flooding.
