Nature Journal
Bear Island WMA (ACE Basin)

On February 12, we went to the Audubon Society's field trip to Bear Island Wildlife Management Area to see the migratory Tundra Swans. We were not disappointed! Not only did we see quite a few of them, but we also saw White Pelicans, Glossy Ibis, White Ibis, Mottled Duck, Teal (blue and green), Ruddy Duck, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, Anhinga, American Coot, Common Moorhen, Yellowlegs, Bonaparte's Gull, Merlin, Kildeer, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Lesser Scaup, and Eastern Meadowlark. The very knowledgeable DNR people kindly took us around the property in their open-air truck trailer, providing us opportunities we couldn't have had on our own.

On our drive home, I noticed a
beautiful Red-Shouldered Hawk
on a power line above. It was not
bothered by our stopping the
car, getting out and taking
quite a few photos.
