While participating in a Master Naturalist program, I picked up a long-leaf pine cone and noticed an interesting mass within it. After asking an onsite expert what it could be, I was told it was a Praying Mantis egg case! Assuming the eggs had already hatched, I took the cone home and placed it in a plastic bag. Several weeks later, to my surprise, I looked at the cone again and saw six babies! I immediately took them and the pine cone out of the bag and placed them in an outdoor planter.
