Cicadas are large flying insects. Periodical cicadas emerge from underground after 17 years, but they only live 30 days after emerging. The other kind, annual Cicadas, appear every summer. As a kid, I used to pull their abandoned shells off pine trees often. The nymphs come out of the ground and climb the nearest tree to molt. That allows them to unfold their wings and fly. There are some 2,500 different cicada species around the world.
